"Mom Rage" - It is a real issue and CBD can help

What is Mom Rage?

“Mom rage is a phenomenon in which moms experience intense anger that is unexplained, intense, and often very disruptive to their daily life,” explains Carli Blau, a psychotherapist certified in perinatal mental health from New York.

Upset woman

This rage can be triggered by a variety of factors, such as sleep deprivation, a lack of support, the challenges of parenting, or external stressors. Mom rage can manifest as yelling, snapping at children, feeling overwhelmed, or even, in some cases, acting out physically or violently. It's important to note that experiencing mom rage doesn't make someone a bad mother; it's a common but often unspoken aspect of the challenges of motherhood.

Mom Rage has been a hot topic of late as The New Yorker’s recent article, “What is Mom Rage, Actually?” and the Today Show spoke about this topic and why so many parents have it all within the last month. Additionally, Minna Dublin’s viral essay struck a chord with mothers worldwide. So, in today's blog post we are going to dig further into who develops "Mom Rage" and how CBD can help those dealing with it.

Who Develops "Mom Rage"?

Up to 21 percent of women experience perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMAD)2, of which postpartum rage can be a symptom. As our children age, however, mom rage can be a way mothers express unattended stress, worry, isolation, sadness, or fear. Mom rage can affect anyone, including Dads, who have never before had issues with anger, anxiety, or even depression. Anna Palacios, a professional counselor, licensed in Texas and Florida who works with moms says, “It often takes moms by surprise because their once cool, calm, and collected personality seems to have disappeared.” (Litner, 2022)

Typically I believe those that are most likely to develop "Mom Rage" are those moms/parents with little children. As I was speaking with a family member, that has tweens and teens, recently about this very topic they are grateful to be past the days of "Mom Rage" but they can remember how long and hard those days were. So if you are in the thick of it with little kids, know that the days are long but the years are quick and from other Moms experience this too shall pass.

So now that we have learned a little bit more about Mom Rage and how it impacts so many lets hear from a fellow mom who has leveraged CBD to help combat "Mom Rage".

Testimony

I too can personally attest as mom of three little kids that "Mom Rage" can come out of me at times and when I reflect back on those moments I see it impacting me most when I am not taking care of myself first. The days that I prioritize my quiet time, exercise and am eating well I find that I am better equipped to handle what the day throws at me. Now this doesn't mean that I don't ever deal with "Mom Rage" because I do but when I am taking care of myself it helps me recover more quickly.

But for the days that I am on the struggle bus or when my kids are on another level I reach for my CBD oil to help me calm down. I love that I can use CBD Oil to help me quickly and naturally calm down without impacting my ability to parent my kids. Prior to trying CBD I would have reached for a glass of wine or even Ashwagandha which both worked but Wine alters your mental state and Ashwagandha definitely lowered my cortisol levels but I love that CBD relaxes my mind and body. - Megan

Research Behind How CBD Can Help

CBD, or cannabidiol, is one of at least 113 cannabinoids found in the Hemp plant. CBD is a non-psychoactive compound that does not cause the “high” associated with THC/Marijuana. (Grinspoon, 2021) CBD interacts with the cannabinoid type receptor, the serotonin receptor and other receptors in the brain that regulate fear and anxiety-induced behaviors. (Thiesen, 2023) “Serotonin is a chemical that carries messages between nerve cells in the brain and throughout your body. Serotonin plays a key role in such body functions as mood, sleep, digestion, nausea, wound healing, bone health, blood clotting and sexual desire. Serotonin levels that are too low or too high can cause physical and psychological health problems.” (Cleveland Clinic)

In a 2020 study, researchers evaluated the effectiveness of CBD on 397 adults in New Zealand.  After 3 weeks of receiving CBD treatment all groups reported improvement in their overall quality of life and for those that were being treated for anxiety or depression they reported improvements in their ability to perform daily functions and reduce pain and anxiety or depression symptoms. (Medical News Today, 2023)

So, as you can see CBD can be used to help your body and mind regulate in times of stress, or anxiety. In fact, over 50% of adults ages 26-41 who use CBD use it to alleviate anxiety, to reduce stress and/or relax. (Hall, 2023) Therefore, CBD has great potential to help moms or dads dealing with “Mom Rage” and the symptoms of anger, anxiety and depression.
